(Dave), my friend, now that you're 40
Don't start to dye your hair
Don't think of having face lifts
And don't change the clothes you wear
Don't modify your language
Don't rebel and cause outrage
Decide to do the decent thing

So it's your fortieth birthday;
Four decades have gone and passed.
They say when you get older,
Time goes twice as fast.
I wouldn't know, of course,
Since I am still quite young,

It's three A.M.; again, my Love, I've awoken from such a lovely "dream"
After all of this time, you remain here; I still feel your constant presence
In this vivid "dream", we've rekindled our first intimate moment together
It was fifteen years ago last night you gave to me, my true womanhood
It is Wednesday today; should go to work, I'll find an excuse not to show
It's dark outside; think I'll get dressed, jump into the car and go for a ride

Happy 40th
Might as well be
You don't even have to wait and see
No, not an old soul
One decrepitly weak
Leave me

On my 40th birthday,
I went to a book store,
Pulled a book off the shelf
Turned to page eight, and saw my name
In boldface type, over my own words.
I was happy to fork over the 11.95+tax
To buy a book with my own poems in it,

last night
before I lay down to sleep
I prayed the Lord my shape to keep
to let no wrinkles come.
nor age spots to grow
where once my youthful vigor
radiated and I was youthfully young

For you this birthday ought to be a sun
Overriding all the other stars.
Rarely have I seen a smile like yours,
Touching hearts from Venus clear to Mars,
Yet genuine, as if from pleasure spun.

For you this birthday ought to be a sun
Overriding all the other stars.
Rarely have I seen resolve like yours,
Touching with your gentle laugh the scars
Yielded in the battles you have won.
