When I was a child, you were my world
You encompassed divinity, beauty, wisdom and grace
You showed me the paths that would lie before me;
You taught me to see my heart and find you there.
But how quickly I grew past that age of adulation!
My friends now took the altar that I had you installed in
My teachers showed me a greater world than you had
I rebelled at your love, balked at your knowledge
Yet you were there.
I found a new love and dreamed a new life
My heart soared with happiness at my dreams fulfilled
Now the sun in my eyes was my love, my new home
I reduced you to a mere twinkling star in my sky.
And yet, you were there.
It was not until I laid eyes on my newborn child
That I looked at you in a newfound light
How far away from you I had travelled and gone
Yet, how close you held me still
O how could you have always been there for me?
And now, as a mother, I know my child will take
Me off the altar as I once did to you
But I know now, my dear mother that like you
I too will be there for her
Until she finds her way back to me.
For I know now
That you are the anchor of my turbulent life
The shore that always waits for me
It is to you that my lifeboat will travel towards
For it is you dear Mother, who gave me sails to seek.
Happy Birthday dearest Ma. Thank you for making me, me.
It was not until I read Meena's poem: "Genuine Gold", that I realised how much I sometimes took my mother for granted. A big
thanks to Meena.
